Understanding Diamond Quality

February 2026

The four characteristics that define a diamond — cut, color, clarity, and carat — each contribute differently to its appearance. Cut is the most critical factor, determining how light moves through the stone and returns to the eye.

Color in diamonds is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). DETARA sources diamonds in the D–G range, ensuring a colorless to near-colorless appearance that maximizes brilliance.

Clarity grades range from Flawless to Included. For everyday wear, VS1–SI1 grades offer the best balance of quality and value. Inclusions in these grades are typically invisible to the naked eye.

Carat is a unit of weight, not size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear very different in size depending on their cut proportions. A well-cut 1.00ct diamond will appear larger than a poorly-cut 1.20ct stone.

All DETARA diamonds above 0.30ct are certified by IGI or GIA — the two most respected independent grading laboratories in the world.
