How to Choose a Diamond Engagement Ring
March 2026
Selecting an engagement ring is one of the most considered purchases a person makes. Understanding the relationship between cut, clarity, and carat weight allows you to make a decision grounded in knowledge rather than pressure.
The cut of a diamond is the single most important factor in its appearance. A well-cut diamond will return light beautifully, creating the brilliance and fire that makes diamonds so captivating. We recommend prioritizing cut quality above all other factors.
Clarity refers to the presence of internal characteristics called inclusions. Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. A VS2 or SI1 clarity grade typically offers excellent value — the inclusions are not visible without magnification.
Carat weight is the most misunderstood factor. A larger carat weight does not always mean a more beautiful diamond. A smaller, well-cut diamond will often outperform a larger, poorly-cut stone.
At DETARA, every diamond is individually selected and certified by IGI or GIA. We offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds — both are real diamonds, differing only in their origin.
